Don't Attempt "Do It Yourself" Door Repairs

Times are hard, and trying to carry out your own door repairs is tempting.

You might successfully carry out a minor repair here or there; however, more complex or safety repairs are often a different matter.

In this article, we explain why.

Industrial doors may look straightforward, but they must balance correctly and run true in their tracks. They must also be structurally intact and have all safety systems operational.

For example, Roller Shutters have shafts at each end held in the supporting structure. If a door runs out of alignment, the curtain slowly shifts across with each rotation.  As a result, the curtain could start rubbing on that supporting structure, potentially cutting into the endplates. If this continues, the door will either snag in the guides or on the bearings, and if the endplates cut through, the door could fall out.

And if you try to shift the curtain back without being aware of the possible damage it has caused to the structure, it could be a costly mistake.

The same goes for electrical issues.  You may be an electrician or know someone who is, but electricians are unfamiliar with how door systems work.  Attempting work on a control panel can cause additional problems or even cause the panel to blow. Control panel replacements can be costly, so we do not advise this.

We often receive phone calls asking for advice on door repairs. If it's cleaning a sensor or resetting the emergency stop switch, we are more than happy to advise you. However, please don't be offended if we refuse to give advice or send out parts. Instead, we will state that an engineer's visit is required to assess the door and its safety.
